Mystery illness strikes hockey players as more than TWO DOZEN become violently ill during game

An investigation is underway to discover what caused more than two dozen hockey players to suddenly become violently ill right before and during games on Sunday night.

The Taylor Sportsplex, in Michigan, was evacuated and a violent strain of flu suspected as being the cause for the wave of sickness which struck players on different rinks during the state teenage regional hockey playoffs.

Several of the players were taken to hospital suffering from vomiting and diarrhea which struck down most of the teens - who were all male - around the same time, The Detroit News reported.

Fire chief Bob Tompos told myFOXdetroit.com there did not appear to be anything wrong with the air quality in the Taylor Sportsplex, but the complex was shut down.

Water contamination was also suspected and results are due back tomorrow.
