'Death to America!' Afghan protesters burn Obama effigies as anger over U.S. soldier who killed 16 civilians rises

Students burned effigies of Barack Obama and chanted 'death to America' in eastern Afghanistan today - as anger towards the U.S. soldier who massacred 16 civilians on Sunday continued to rise.

Taliban militants also opened fire on a delegation of senior Afghan officials - including two of President Hamid Karzai's brothers - who were visiting the southern villages he targeted.

The attack raised worries of a repeat of the wave of violent demonstrations that rocked the nation after last month's burning of Korans by troops at a U.S. base.

It came as it was revealed the 38-year-old father-of-two soldier may have come under an intense and blind fury that led him to indiscriminately kill after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

The militants who attacked today killed an Afghan soldier providing security for the delegation in Balandi village. Another Afghan soldier and a military prosecutor were wounded.

The delegation was in a mosque for a memorial service for those killed when the gunfire erupted, but one of the president's brothers, Qayum Karzai, said the attack did not 'seem serious'. Read More
