The founder of Megaupload has claimed that 'a large number' of US government officials are members of his file-sharing website.Kim Dotcom, who is currently under house arrest in Auckland, New Zealand, said he hoped he would soon be able to give them permission to access their accounts. The site has been seized by the FBI and is currently inaccessible.
The news comes as it was revealed New Zealand authorities granted Dotcom residency in 2010 after deciding the money he could bring to the country outweighed his criminal past.
Dotcom had been convicted in his native Germany for computer fraud and stock-price manipulation.
In January this year New Zealand police arrested the 38-year-old along with three senior members of Megaupload on charges of criminal copyright infringement.
Speaking to the Torrentfreak blog this week, Dotcom said: 'Guess what – we found a large number of Mega accounts from US Government officials including the Department of Justice and the US Senate.
'I hope we will soon have permission to give them and the rest of our users access to their files.'
